How the face ages

Losing fatty tissue in our faces is a normal part of aging, and the impact of significant weight loss, gravity, and over-exposure to the sun are readily apparent over the years. Each face ages in its own unique way, but gauntness, wrinkling, and vertical folds and lines on both sides of the mouth are common. The rounded fat pads in the cheeks – a hallmark characteristic of the youthful face -also thin and migrate downward as we get older, giving the face a tired or worn look.

Where Does It Work?

Everyone’s skin ages differently and Juvéderm® XC may be used to rejuvenate your areas of concern. From smile lines to vertical lip lines, you can smooth away unwanted wrinkles and restore natural contours.

How does Juvéderm® XC Work?

Young, healthy-looking skin contains an abundance of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). But as you age, sunlight and other factors can reduce the amount of HA in your skin. The lack of HA causes your skin to lose structure and volume, creating unwanted facial wrinkles and folds – like those parentheses lines around your nose and mouth.

Using a dermal filler like Juvéderm® XC is a safe and effective way to replace the HA your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.

Who can benefit from Juvéderm® XC?

Juvéderm® XC is used for treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It’s also effective for filling out thin lips and the hollow areas around the eyes and the crease from top of the nose to the corner of the lips (one of the areas most prone to fat loss). In some cases it has also been used for restoring volume to the cheekbones and mid-face.

What is the procedure like?

The doctor will decide the best placement for Juvéderm® XC after carefully evaluating the unique way your face is aging. Areas to be treated are numbed with a topical anesthetic to make the procedure comfortable;

Juvéderm® XC is then injected with a very fine needle to correct the contour irregularities present on your skin.

What can I expect after the treatment?

Results of Juvéderm® XC typically last 9-12 months. You will need touch-ups and repeat treatments to maintain the volume and wrinkle correction you desire over the years.

What are the Risks?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are effective and have proven to be very safe when administered in a medical setting by a qualified and trained doctor. Juvéderm® XC offers another advantage in that you don’t need to be pre-tested for a possible allergic reaction to it, since it’s biodegradable and doesn’t contain ingredients that cause an allergic reaction in most people. We will learn about your medical history and ask you some important health questions to make sure Juvederm is a good option for you.

Side effects from Juvéderm® XC are usually minor and temporary. You may have some redness and swelling at the treatment sites for a few days, along with mild bruising or skin firmness. It’s not unusual for uneven swelling to occur, with one side more prominent than the other. Typically,
this lasts for a couple of days before it resolves itself.
